Notebooks Computers - A Simple Introduction.

Notebooks Computers are portable personal computers that can be carried along and used almost anywhere, much like a notebook.  Notebooks computers typically weigh about 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) and are small enough to fit into a briefcase. Notebooks Computers usually have all the functionality of a desktop, but are less powerful, more expensive, and have greater portability.

The first notebooks computers available commercially were introduced to the public in 1981 and were named the Osborne 1. These notebooks computers were understandably bulkier than the ones we see available these days. Nevertheless, these revolutionary notebooks computers -- which did not run on battery power and had to be plugged in for AC power -- took the business world by storm because of their portability, a feature that is notably absent in the heftier desktops.

Then came the Compaq Portable, first made public in 1983 and also ran on AC power rather than batteries. This first-ever IBM-compatible notebook computer proved to better than the IBM's own Portable Computer that was introduced a year later.

The GRiD Compass 1101, released in 1982, were notebooks computers in the true sense of the term. The brainchild of William Moggridge, these notebooks computers had the typical clamshell design -- where the screen folds and shuts against the keyboard -- that is now practically the industry standard. These notebooks computers were not IBM-compatible, ran on batteries and had a prohibitively high price tag. As one may guess, it was used by the specific few -- mainly the military and astronauts.

The Sharp PC-5000 and the Gavilan notebooks computers, appearing in 1984, are also worthy of special mention. As a matter of fact, the Gavilan was the first notebook computer that was promoted as a laptop and had a cursor control device resembling a touch pad. Both had LCD screens and clamshell cases.

The notebooks computers called Kyocera Kyotronic, first introduced in 1983, powered by AA batteries, were a huge commercial success largely because of its portability, battery life and low price.

The first true IBM-compatible notebook computer was the IBM PC Convertible, introduced in 1986 -- followed by Toshiba T1000 and T1200 in the following year. In 1989, Apple introduced the Macintosh Portable notebooks computers.

From 1991 on, innovations initiated by the PowerBook series of Apple became standard features in the modern notebooks computers. These include built-in features like touch pad, palm rest, Ethernet networking, trackball, and 256-color displays. Then followed the Thinkpad series of IBM, which were very popular notebooks computers.

Now almost essential gadgets in the business world, notebooks computers are here to stay.

PC Notebooks - How Do You Choose The Right One?

The single most important reason anyone buys pc notebooks is for their portability. This is a machine that you can take anywhere. If you frequently travel in your work, you need pc notebooks.

If you are journalist traveling the world and submitting articles, you need pc notebooks. And today’s pc notebooks can be as powerful as most desktops with dual processors, large capacity internal drives, and other attractive features. But which one is right for you? How do you determine what pc notebooks will fit your current needs plus allow you to expand for the future?

The first part of the answer to the question of which one is right for you leads to a half-answer: It depends. It depends on what you are going to do with the computer. Are you going to use it for work or recreation? Is it something needed for your profession or are you a hobbyist? Do you play a lot of games? What level of internet access do you need? It is also important to remember that unlike desktop models, pc notebooks cannot be upgraded easily. In fact, pc notebooks usually have no upgrade path so you should take the time to get exactly what you need in terms of features and performance.

One characteristic of pc notebooks one should consider is the screen size. If you need to be able to have a lot of landscape for projects you are working on then consider a wider screen. Screen sizes usually can range from 10.4 inches to 17.1 inches. If you do a lot of work on an airliner in economy class, you are probably better off with a smaller screen size (because of the reclining seatbacks in front of you). Also smaller pc notebooks are just easier and lighter to carry around. Some who do presentations with their pc notebooks will benefit from larger screen sizes such as those that use the newer WXGA technology. WXGA notebook screens can achieve resolutions up to 1366 by 768 pixels.

Battery life in pc notebooks is very important too. If you move around quite a bit, you might want to consider pc notebooks with not only a long lasting battery (most go 2-3 hours), but also one where buying a spare battery is not very expensive. One very inexpensive solution for the battery problem is to buy an external universal battery that can last up to 3-4 hours.

Another feature you need to consider when buying pc notebooks is internet connectivity. You will find that a popular way for people to work these days is with wifi-enabled pc notebooks at a wireless hotspot (such as in coffee shops, restaurants, libraries and airports). If you are buying older used pc notebooks, you may have to get an additional wifi-card if you want to have the mobile connectivity provided by this technology. Also, you will find that most hotels nowadays offer high-speed internet access but it is usually through a wifi connection.

And lastly, you need to consider what other options you want for your notebook computer. Do you want a CD writer or will you need to record DVDs? Do you need premium sound? How large of a disk drive do you need? When it comes to disk space, CD/DVD writers, sound cards, memory, and processor speed, it is best to get it now as opposed to get it later. The reason is this; The upgrade path for most pc notebooks is not very long. This is because pc notebooks are probably replaced every 2-3 years. They are quick becoming just as expendable as a set of tires for your car. And if you do not maximize on memory and processor speed, pc notebooks may not able run efficiently the new application and game software. The more your notebook is adaptable to software upgrades, the longer it will be an effective tool for you.

PC Notebooks. Will It Change Your Life?

With everyone going at warp speed these days, it is no wonder that pc notebooks are becoming more popular. Technology is furiously advancing and more and more features are constantly being included in pc notebooks. Needless to say, people are starting to shift their computing work from a desktop to pc notebooks. As the desktop computer becomes more obsolete, pc notebooks are emerging as the tool of choice for business professionals all over the world.

PC notebooks are starting to equal desktop computers in features and power. With faster processors, bigger hard drives and wireless Internet access, pc notebooks are fast becoming the business professional's tool of choice.  Professionals that are successful go where the business is and pc notebooks allow them to do just that.

If you are looking for the best in pc notebooks, your first consideration must be their weight. The whole purpose of pc notebooks is to be easily portable. PC notebooks are very portable, and their screens use the same flat-panel technology that is used in LCD’s and Plasma. PC Notebooks can be handy in situations where you wouldn’t dream of carrying a desktop computer. PC Notebooks are highly compatible with wi-fi and HSDPA. The idea is to connect to the world in a better way and increase corporate advantage.

Something else to remember when judging the best pc notebooks is battery life. Of course older pc notebooks aren't going to last very long for obvious reasons. Still there are good power consumption pc notebooks that you need to find.

Thinner and lighter pc notebooks have become more necessary with all the newer more powerful cellphones. The new style also comes with the times, where everybody wants something lightweight and inexpensive, especially pc notebooks. Just look around you; phones are thinner, computer monitors are thinner and televisions are thinner too.

Nobody can predict the future, but trends in technology can be charted by how much people rely on them for their everyday lives. PC Notebooks are becoming more a part of society and the fabric of everyday life. I think it is pretty safe to assume that technology companies will continue to develop new features and uses for powerful pc notebooks. The future is wide open for pc notebooks.

So What's The Deal With The Lightest Notebooks Computers Anyway?

I went looking for the lightest notebooks computers the other day and after a couple hours of searching I was getting pretty frustrated. "Ultalight notebooks computers", "light weight notebooks computers" - I kept trying different approaches.

What I found was a lot of old machines - 1, 2, even 3 years old. And a ton of spam websites that took my search keys and created a dynamic page. That left going to the manufacturers and looking at actual product specs to see who actually has the lightest notebooks computers. Fortunately I finally found a list to start from so here they are - the lightweights.

The Fujitsu LifeBook Q2010 notebooks computers weigh in at 2.2 pounds with a 12.1 inch screen. Unfortunately they have a 1.2Ghz processor and a 30 GB hard drive though it comes with XP Pro and a DVD writer.

The Dell Latitude D420 notebooks computers also have a 12.1 inch screen and is significantly less expensive but again 1.2 GHz and a slow (4200rpm) 30 GB HD and it weighs around 3 pounds. It also comes with 512MB of DDR2-533 SDRAM on an integrated DIMM. The upgrade to 1GB or to 1.5GB is reasonable, but the 2GB configuration costs an extra $1000 (probably because it requires a 1.5GB DIMM).

The Sony VAIO VGNTX750PB notebooks computers weigh 2.76 pounds. They have a smaller screen (11.1 inches) than some of the others, a 1.2 GHz processor, but it includes an 80GB hard drive and a DVD+-RW dual layer combo Drive. The memory is upgradeable to 1.5 GB.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X60 notebooks computers at 3.3 pounds have a 1.66GHz Core Duo, a 12.1 inch screen and a 60 GB hard drive. The memory is theoretically upgradeable to 4GB, but it has no optical drive. You need to get a ThinkPad X6 Ultrabase to add a CD or DVD drive. That kind of hampers its mobile uses.

The Averatec AV2260 notebooks computers, weighing in at 4 pounds, comes with a 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 Mobile, a 12.1 inch screen, 1GB installed DDR-SDRAM, an 80GB hard drive and a DVD+-RW Dual Layer Combination Drive. So it's a little like an overweight Sony on steroids. It's also the least expensive of the six lightweights. The others run from around $1200 to over $2300 depending on the seller and configuration.

Though slightly heavier at 4.4 pounds, the HP Compaq nc6400 notebooks computers are unusual in having a 14.1 inch Wide XGA screen. It comes with a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor, 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a 60GB hard drive and a DVD/CDRW Drive. The lowest price I saw in a quick search was $1259.99. Most of the models I saw were being advertised with 80GB drives and DVD+-RW/DVD-RAM optical drives, rather than the 60GB and DVD/CDRW drives.

Obviously the lightest notebooks computers in this list are the Fujitsus. If you really want ultralight notebooks computers, then you will have to accept some sacrifices. Personally, I think I'd rather have a more capable machine. I also don't like the small screen sizes on the very light notebooks computers.

As with any computer purchase it's critical that you carefully analyze just what you're going to do with a machine. Lightweight notebooks computers are nice simply because they're less hassle to lug around, but there compromises involved that may make extra weight a less significant issues. Aside from tending to be more expensive, lightweight notebooks computers will almost always have a smaller screen and a more compact keyboard than heavier notebooks. The real question you need to ask yourself isn't "What's the lightest notebook computer?" it's "What's are the lightest notebooks computers that meets my requirements?"
